I was commissioned to create parasols for the beautiful new cafe at West Lexham retreat centre in Norfolk. Their ethos is of peace, creativity and beauty and it reminded me of the aesthetics of the Arts and Crafts movement. I took inspiration from the whirls on a William de Morgan painted tile to create this organic pattern which looks like the curled heads of new fern fronds.
I chose teal to complement and contrast with the warm red, orange tones of the Norfolk clay tiled buildings, and the lusciously verdant foliage. The painterly blue green colouring of this parasol looks incredible in a garden setting, on a terrace or over a table for alfresco dining. The tones and style of the pattern are easy to match with cushions and napkins, both cool and warm colours will work beautifully.
Our goal is that parasol canopies are like a summer hat and easily changed to create different scenes and looks. The canopy is easily removable to swap with any our covers, or for cleaning. The corners are Velcro and removing the cover is a simple matter of undoing the corners and unscrewing the wooden top piece.

HOW THEY'RE MADE
Our Round Bamboo Parasols are made in Bali. The fact that the parasols are handmade is an essential element of their appeal: many of these processes cannot be mechanised without compromising the beauty and personality of the fabrics. The parasols have contrasting coloured or thread-work linings, making the insides (which you look at when sitting underneath) as striking as the outsides.
